New Roots Program

Grow Through What you Go Through
A nature-based group wellness program
Fully funded by Island Health, and in partnership with the City of Victoria and the City of Saanich. 
For Youth ages 11-14 who are self-motivated to participate in an awesome and supportive group environment for personal growth. (middle school program will be offered in winter and spring sessions)

 

We are SO excited to be offering this new program for youth, ages 11-14

New Roots is a nature-based wellness program for youth who are looking to develop healthy strategies to cope with stress and anxiety. Find peer support and mentors who will help you explore new strategies in a fun, no-pressure, safe, and supportive outdoor setting. Youth will have the chance to pause from the hectic demands of life to re-connect with their Self and the natural world. Situated in beautiful local parks, youth will have the chance to participate in yoga, hiking, invasive species art project, nature connection, team building, mindfulness and effective tools for cultivating a peaceful state of mind.  Parents/guardians will also have the opportunity to attend 3 parent-only evening sessions, with a focus on supporting youth and personal wellness.

Where: Government House Gardens

When:  Wednesdays, 3:15-5:15pm

Dates: January 16 to March 13, 2019 

plus closing celebration event for families by Power To Be at their beautiful Prospect Lake nature site.  (paddling, forest exploration, campfire). Date TBA

Parent/guardian session dates @ Crystal Pool and Fitness centre, 7-9pm.  dates TBA

Facilitators:  Sean Frey, RPC; Sarah Duncan, MA; and awesome volunteer

Saanich Location:

Where: Beaver Lake Park   (spring 2019 program location in Central Saanich!)

When: Thursdays, 3:30-5:30pm

Dates: January 17 – March 14th, 2019;  Spring program starting in April 12, 2019

Parent/guardian sessions: 7-9pm @ Saanich Commonwealth Place, dates TBA

This program takes place entirely outdoors, rain or shine!  Youth are expected to show up with appropriate clothing for our West Coast weather. We will only cancel in the case of extreme wind/rain.  Also, due to daylight savings time, the last 3 weeks will take place partially in the dusk – but we will take full advantage of fun evening activities.

  • After your expression of interest we will email you an intake form and detailed program information. We will then set up a time to meet briefly with each youth at your location of preference – either at or near your school or at the Recreation Centre (Oak Bay, Crystal Pool, Commonwealth Place, etc).
